‘Real reason Boko Haram members are mostly successful in Nigeria’

An expert has sited Nigeria’s porous borders as a major reason Boko Haram, a terrorist group, successfully launches attacks on villages in the north-east.

The Guardian reports that Commodore Yaminu Musa (rtd), the coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Strategy (NACFEST) revealed this at a three-day workshop on joint border control and enhanced regional cooperation in Lagos.

Commodore Musa, who spoke at the workshop organised by the European Union and the United Nations Office on Dr*gs and Crime (UNODC), said: “There is credible intelligence indicating downward movements of weapons from Libya following the continuous assault on ISIS forces in Sirte.

“There is also mass smuggling of small arms and light weapons (SALW) from Northern Mali.

“These smuggled arms most times find their ways through the porous and extensive Sahel region into Nigeria.

“Along our maritime borders, there are challenges of piracy, illegal oil bunkering, militancy, kidnapping for ransom among other criminalities.

“These challenges are enormous and

worrisome considering the large expanse of lands and waters that need to be secured at huge cost to Nigeria and also to her neighbours.”

ZENITHBLOG.com reports that the Boko Haram challenge is said to be common to Lake Chad Basin countries of Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

Currently, the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) provides an elaborate framework for collaboration between the armed forces of affected countries.

Musa said this collaboration has been largely effective and has led to the massive degrading of terrorists and their dislodgement from Sambisa forest.

On his part, the UNODC Nigerian representative, Christina Albertin, talked about the need to enhance cooperation between Nigeria’s border countries and that this was the reason for the workshop.

The workshop, according to the report, was funded by the European Union, UNODC and Japan and it brought together security experts and delegates from Nigeria, the Chad, Niger, Republic of Benin and Cameroon.
