Following the go ahead given by President Muhammadu Buhari that the Nigerian Maritime University in Delta state be opened for session in the 2017/2018 academic year, Senator representing Delta south in the National Assembly, Senator James Ebiowou Manager, has revealed the source of funding for the university.
In a statement signed on Friday by Laolu Akande, senior special assistant on media and publicity to the Vice President, President Buhari directed the education authorities to ensure the university opens for session before the end of 2017.
The president said the decision is in line with the demands made by major stakeholders in the region and also part of the Niger Delta New Vision of Buhari’s administration.

Consequently, Senator Manager who represents Delta south where the university is located in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri south, revealed various channels through which the university will be funded so as to avoid financial crisis as the maritime institution commences session.

Senator Manager said: “Additional funding for the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, shall accrue from one per cent of the total annual budget of the
“It will also accrue from 0.5 per cent of the total annual budget of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas; 0.3 per cent of the total annual budget of all the oil-producing companies operating in the Niger Delta area.”
Senator Manager added: “Funds would also be drawn from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund); 10 per cent of such sums in the cabotage vessel finance fund as may be approved by National Assembly; and 15 per cent of the total annual budget of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency.”

Manager, who expressed satisfaction over the speed with which the bill to establish the university is sailing in the national assembly, a bill he sponsored, said it was the doing of God.
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state had, had during the May Day celebration, hinted that the university would resume session for the 2017/2018 academic year, noting that the federal government was working through the federal ministry of education to speed up the exercise.
