OPINION: Why politicians must not be allowed to ruin Nigeria

Editor’s note: Religious and ethnic clashes have become rampant in Nigeria in recent times. In most cases, politicians instigate one tribe against the other in order to score political points or for their selfish gains.

In a message sent to ZENITHBLOG.com, a Facebook user, Omololu Omotosho explains why the major ethnic groups in Nigeria should come together to live in peace and harmony. He also gives reasons politicians should not be allowed to destroy the country.

Nigeria is a country with more than 200 tribes, with Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba being the well-known tribes.

An ethnic and religious clash as a result of political affiliation or allegiance is unnecessary: We have herdsmen clashes in Nigeria, tribes used by politicians to battle other tribes for political gains and violent groups sponsored by the elite for selfish gains.

OPINION: Why politicians must not be allowed to ruin Nigeria

Identity politics is only used by politicians for selfish reasons. When Nigerians vote for politicians along tribal and religious lines, those politicians do not respect those allegiances after they get into office but the elite from diverse tribes pull a seat on the table in the Judiciary, National Assembly, and Presidency to share our oil monies without recourse or respect to the affiliations in our personal lives.

We should endeavour to vote for politicians that we genuinely share ideology with, instead of just identifying with their personalities.

Senator Shehu Sani has been imprisoned and

vocal about identifying with the struggles of the working class in Nigeria and he has obviously enunciated and demonstrated those values since elected to the National Assembly.

He is an example of a politician that does not only talk the talk but walk the walk.
