Meet lady tricycle rider who takes decision for men but there is heavy opposition from the menfolk

Miss Onyebuchi Obulueze is the only female tricycle rider in Asaba, the Delta state capital

– Besides being only female rider, she is the chairman of her unit where she makes decision for men but with heavy oppostion from the menfolk

– Though she is not disturbed with the heavy opposition, she desires quitting when she has enough money to set up another business

Miss Onyebuchi Obulueze is a tricycle rider in Asaba, the capital city of Delta state. She is the only lady riding tricycle among the over 1000 riders in the city. She is an indigene of Abala Unor, a rural community in Ndokwa east local government area of Delta state. A 28-year-old lady, Obulueze is the chairman of her unit, Traffic light unit in Asaba.

Prior to joining the tricycle riding business in Asaba, Miss Obulueze attended City Commercial College in Asaba. That was far back in 1999. Unfortunately, the proprietor of the school died and she had to move over to St. Brigids Girls Grammar School, also in Asaba where she made her school certificate in 2010.

After writing her Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in another school, she took up serving a lady, whom she said maltreated her very badly, hence she left. “So, after that I just decided to look for tricycle and ride. I prefer to depend on myself and do what I can do to survive on my own than look up to man. That was why I picked up keke and began to ride,” Obulueze told ZENITHBLOG.com.

According to her, she borrowed the money for the keke which she paid back on installment basis. And since she began tricycle riding, it has not been bad for her. But one issue she is contending with is her leadership of the unit in her hand.

She said: “Presently, I’m the traffic light unit chairman but I’m having difficulties there with the people. Because where they have been eating from, it’s like I’m trying to block them. They are eating people’s money. And I decide to bring an end to it. But all my executives are now against me.”

For her, being chairman as a woman in an association dominated with men is a herculean task. The opposition is stiff. Besides being a woman chairman among men, they are opposing her as she is seen to blocking their moves.

Being the chairman is tough. Both mockery and so many other things I face in their hands but I have to keep on moving because I know what I’m aiming at. So I will keep on moving till I achieve my goal.

“If you are good, God will assist you to achieve your goals. But if you are bad, you will end up after the whole thing, achieving nothing. All the efforts you are putting in will be fruitless. But if you are doing the right thing, God will guide you. Just keep on praying to him, he will guide through.

“That is my belief. I will not tell you that it’s easy, and I’m enjoying it, no, it’s tough. But I know one day things will work out well for me,” she explained with all firmness.

When asked about her parents, she said she has parents with whom she lives, even with her relations in Asaba. She told ZENITHBLOG.com that from the tricycle riding, she makes money to take care of her needs as a lady. She does not need to go to her mother to ask for money to buy certain things that are necessary for ladies.

When I want to make my hair, I don’t need to meet my mother to give me money. I f I want to buy anything for myself, I can buy it without looking at anybody’s face. If I want to do anything that requires money I do it without looking at somebody.

However, she desires quitting tricycle riding. For that, she believes that God will open opportunity for her to make money and get a good business from which she would fulfill her life ambition.

When asked to say what she has in mind to do, she said: “I may not tell you what I have in mind to do but as soon as I raise the money I will do it. I will save the money and my dream will come through. That is just what I want to say.”

As a lady working in the midst of men, she has not found it easy. She agreed that men approach her but she said: “What will they give to me, nothing. Only what they will do is to bring shame, problems to you. I have been into relationships with about five guys. I have been into relationship with them but they have not helped matters.

“They are not helping me but helping to kill me the more. They are trying to even frustrate me and make me regret ever coming into this world. So, I don’t think they exist and I don’t need them. In my life, they don’t exist.

When asked to advice ladies who are prostituting in cities, Obulueze said: “I don’t go into people’s affairs. I mind my own business. In the compound where I live you will see that I don’t even ask people what they are carrying. I mind my business, I go out in the morning, I come back late. I enter the house and sleep. Some of my neighbours in the compound, I don’t even know them.

“That is me, I don’t ask people about their welfare. About those girls prostituting, that is their life. They have their lives to live. They are no kids, they are adults, they know what is good for them. That one is best for them. I will not advise you because many of them are older than me, some are younger, they know what is good for them.”
