– A controversial study from The Netherlands claims men are smarter than women
– The research says male brains are around 14 per cent larger than those of females
– But there are other scientists countering that the study lacks full evidence
Even though men have larger brains, several studies have revealed that women’s are more efficient in several aspects.
The research made in the Netherlands found male brains are around 14 per cent larger than those of females. The group of scientists performed MRI scans on 896 people of both sexes.
The research, led by Erasmus University, nevertheless states that women are around 3.75 IQ points less intelligent than men. They claim women also do worse spatial ability tests.
Dr Dimitri van der Linden said that “our analysis suggests this is the reason for lower average general intelligence across a range of tests.” He does admit that “we are aware of previous research suggesting women’s brains are better organised or process information more efficiently but we did not look at this in our study.”
This study supports a controversial Charles Darwin claim that men’s brains were larger than those of women. Hence said “a wife [is] better than a dog, anyhow,” stating their brains were halfway between that of a child and a man.

The study is part of the Human Connectome Project, and was published in the journal Intelligence.
On the other hand, the head of experimental psychology at University College London, Dr Joseph Devlin, said that although it is “a well-researched study but the evidence is not strong enough to prove that larger male brains are more intelligent than smaller female brains, which makes it a leap of faith, using a measure of general intelligence which has little basis.”
Another research at University of California also found that women’s brains could perform more quickly, because they had better connections between brain cells.
Other studies have shown that women perform better in memory tests.
