EFCC’s Magu finally discovers enemies of corruption in Nigerian government

Those actually destroying the war against corruption under President Muhammadu Buhari are the same people elected to protect the public and the poor, Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed.

Magu, who addressed a crowd at an EFCC stakeholders’ walk in Abuja, revealed that those in authority were frustrating the war against corruption.

The Punch reports that Magu also condemned calls from some quarters that the EFCC should not prosecute or focus on punishing politically-exposed persons.

“It is time to weep for those who believe they can perpetually hold down Nigeria as a cow and milk her to death.

“It is time to weep for supposed men and women of honour who pose as corruption fighters but when they think we are not looking, they plot and fund the collapse of the anti-corruption war.

“While most of us who feel the pains of corruption are asking for more vigour in the fight, the cabal profiting from corruption would want the campaign watered down.

“While many Nigerians are calling for stiffer punishment for the corrupt, the patrons of corruption now tell us that it does not pay to punish the corrupt,” he said.

ZENITHBLOG.com reports that the event was replicated in Lagos with some rights activists taking part.

Joe Okei-Odumaki, the president of Women Arise for Change Initiative, called on Nigerians to continue to expose corruption while the chairman of CACOL, Debo Adeniran, urged Nigerians to be determined to wipe out corruption.

The leader of the Coalition of Human Rights Defenders, Inibehe Effiong, was quoted as saying only a sustained effort in the war against corruption can help in its eradication.

Recall that Senate President Bukola Saraki recently described the corruption war of Buhari’s government as not yielding the desired result.

Saraki, who is being prosecuted by the government, asked the EFCC to focus on prevention of corruption instead of focusing on fighting it.

However, when the criticisms greeted his statement on the anti-corruption fight, the Senate issued a statement denying claims that it is mocking the anti-graft war by the federal government and describing those who hold such opinion as “mischievous elements.”

The Senate said there are “more than enough proofs” to show that the lawmakers were working to strengthen the anti-corruption process and institutions for increasing the efficiency of the war.
