We wish President Buhari quick recovery, but he should confirm our son as CJN – Cross River elders

Some eminent personalities of Cross River state under the auspices of Cross River State Elders Forum has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to confirm Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The elders also prayed for the president’s “speedy recovery and a safe return to the country in good health”.

The made the call at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, February 6, even as they thanked President Buhari for the appointment of Cross River sons and daughters into top positions in his administration.

The Acting CJN Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen is from Cross River state.

Led by CP Lawrence Alobi (rtd), the group urged presidency to forward the name of Justice Onnoghen to the Senate for confirmation as the substantive CJN in line with the Nigerian constitution.

“We the elders of Cross River State Forum, pray that the Almighty God should grant President Muhammadu Buhari, a speedy recovery and a

safe return to the country in good health.

“We therefore humbly and passionately appeal that the president and acting president, as a matter of urgent national importance, should do the needful and forward Justice Onnoghen’s name to the Senate for confirmation as the substantive CJN, in compliance with section 231 (1) of 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended).

“On behalf of the good people of Cross River State, we the Cross River State Elders Forum without any intention to overheat the polity, hereby bring to the fore the critical issue on the appointment of the Chief Justice of Nigeria,’’ Alobi said on behalf the group.

Those present at the press conference include General Moses Obi (rtd), Honourable Michael Etim Agbor, Elder Basset Mbang, Elder Effiom Asiya and Prince Charles Edet, amongst others.

Meanwhile, Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa has dragged the president, the vice-president, the Senate, the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation to court over the delay in Onnoghen’s confirmation.
