He became one of the most contradictory governors in Nigeria, a perfect manager, who knows the exact solution in every situation and the one, who generates a lot of questions around his personality. Who is Peter Obi in fact? What are his achievements and what hidden rocks are present in his political career
Anambra State governor
Peter Obi – the government executive of Anambra State during two terms with a break due to impeachment, he concluded his first term after court decision. In 2010, he won the election again.
His path as a business man began from the post of the Chief executive of Next International Nigeria Ltd.
Now Peter Obi is a deputy of the People Democratic Party. He created a very elaborate financial order in Anambra State, he was a henchman of the budget curtailment regarding unnecessary expenses, and he cut the waste of capital.
Peter Obi emphasized that “the resources we are enjoying today (oil inclusive) are diminishing assets, hence the need to save at least 10% for future generations.”
The next step after his warning was a Bill, sent to the State House of Assembly, further this Bill became a base for the law, which will be in effect until 2050.
He is a man of the clear idea and supports planning, his main idea, that without a plan you fail. He adopted an action program of UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with the focus on several target sectors. He has succeeded in this and became the Best Governor in the realization of the MDGs, therefore he got an invitation to appear at the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in 2014.

Education system
Among Peter Obi’s achievement was “reanimation” of the education. Before Peter Obi reforms, appropriation of funds for education was at a very low point. The next step was the returning of the management of former private schools to their initial owners, while the Government withheld the duties of capital spending. This has beaten a path to conceptually new collaboration between the State and Church. Under his direction, schools across the State received 750 school buses, together with each of 600 schools received N5 million each for creation of school testing rooms. All the secondary schools got Internet connection and computers.
Healthcare
Another of the sectors, which fell for reforming, was the Health sector. Administration of Peter Obi built and equipped the state-of-the-art Anambra State University Teaching Hospital at Awka. Government Hospitals, Schools of Nursing, Schools of Midwifery and Schools of Health Laboratory Technology were re-equipped.
Roads
Roads were the weak point in Anambra State, so reforms of Peter Obi affected the Roads sector. During Peter Obi’s term, more than 900 kilometers of roads and bridges were asphalted and reconstructed.
It is worthy to be noted, that Peter Obi undertook a social security system, and security system in the State and paid all debts (over N37 billion) for salaries and pensions State owed since1999.
Peter Obi and Fidelity Bank
Peter Obi is considered as the youngest Director of Fidelity Bank, Nigeria. There is one very interesting fact about link between the bank prosperity and election of Peter Obi as a governor. The accounting documents show that Fidelity Bank was unprofitable until Mr. Obi took the seat of the governor of the Anambra State. One year of the administration of Peter Obi passed and Fidelity Bank increased its profit by 219 percent, the grows of the profit continued with tremendous figures in the next years. In 2012, Fidelity Bank declared a growth of 608% in the after-tax profit. Nowadays, Fidelity bank takes the sixth place among other banks in Nigeria.
Peter Obi’s net worth
According to different sources, the net worth of Peter Obi has grown greatly in 2017. There is no exact figure, but his estimated net worth in 2017 is approximately $76,286,028, including properties, stocks and luxury goods, such as airplane and yacht.
Peter Obi’s shopping mall
In 2012, Peter Obi has finished the building of multi-billion naira Shopping Mall in Anambra State, it is estimated as the most huge shopping mall in the whole Africa. This private investment was questioned. This enterprise was beyond comprehension of many people. It was said that this extra huge building was created for the sake of Anambra State prosperity, but average citizens were 100 percent sure that Peter Obi has built it not for the Anambra State, but for himself and prosperity of his family.
Taking into account all above mentioned, we cannot say for sure if Peter Obi is a saint or a misappropriator of public funds, he is a contradictory person. Always a bad apple spoils the whole barrel, especially if the apple is not the only one. Many people describe him as one of the most disgraced governors ever, corrupt official, but citizens of Anambra State love and estimate him as a person, who did a lot for State and for life level improvement.
