There was celebration across Minna, Niger state as nearly 5,000 participants in the federal government social intervention scheme N-Power received their first salaries.

The salaries were paid directly to the bank accounts of the participants on Thursday, February 16.

According to ThisDay, in Niger state capital the joyous participants stormed the various banks to withdraw the money.

Each participant in the programme is to receive a monthly stipend of N30, 000.

Abdullahi Nda, one of the participants expressed gratitude to the government “for lifting my economic life”.

Nda said: “I have not touched this type of money since I graduated four years ago, I thank the government, I thank President Buhari”.

Mrs. Affiniki Dauda, the state focal person while addressing some of the beneficiaries described the N-Power programme “as a reality” and urged them to justify their appointments by being dedicated to their job.

She said efforts were being made by the office to fill the vacuum

created by some applicants who could not scale the screening hurdle.

According to her, those not cleared were either overaged or could not prove that they were in one form of employment or the other.

The N-Power programme is designed to engage the massive numbers of unemployed Nigerian graduates from tertiary institutions across the country.

The unemployed graduates selected for the N-POWER programme are given assignments that will help to address issues in schools, hospitals and other areas in communities across the country.

A total of 150,000 out of the 200,000 selected in the first phase of the scheme would be deployed as support teachers to help address shortage of teachers in schools at the basic and secondary levels.
