John Ator who reportedly stole 2 basins of garri at Marian Market, Calabar, Cross River State capital escaped death after angry traders tried to set him on fire.
According to report, the suspect has been in the habit in stealing garri in the market but was apprehended on Wednesday, August 16.

According to one of the market managers who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the 25-year old had been stealing from them for a long time until they laid an ambush for him.
He said: “That is the case with this young man, John Ator, who is now caught as a garri thief who has been a thorn in the flesh of garri women traders at Marian Market, Calabar as he was caught stealing two basins of garri at the said market early hours of Wednesday.
The Garri thief was almost burnt to death by angry traders.
“This act of stealing garri which has become a regular occurrence at the Marian market without knowing those behind the crime got to its peak when traders decided to lay ambush for the thief. Fortunately for the traders and unfortunately for the thief, luck ran out of him (Ator) and he was caught in the early hours.”
Meanwhile, the Senate is to ensure the quick passage of two bills to discourage the peddling of hate speeches and participation in jungle justice in Nigeria.
Senate President Bukola Saraki revealed this as the eighth upper legislative chamber announces its agenda for the next 22-months.
Saraki said the two bills follow the rising tension in the polity adding that they will comprise a major part of the Senate’s social impact agenda when it resumes in September.
