Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) popularly known as Shiites have called on the federal government to release their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, or kill all of them, The Guardian reports.
According to the report, this followed the continued detention of their leader, who has not been freed, despite court orders that he should be released.
The protesters were said to have blocked all the major highways in Kaduna metropolis, chanting, “Free El-Zakzaky, we demand justice, we are Nigerians” “release El-zakzaky or kill us all.”
Speaking on behalf of the Shiites at the procession, Nuhu Mafara, said they were out to demand the unconditional release of their leader who has been in detention for 612 days.

His words: “We members of the movement from Kano, Jigawa, Niger, Bauchi, Zamfara and other northern states are here to demand the unconditional release of our leader. This protest was
“Today also marks the over 250 days since the court of the land ordered his release, but the cabals holding Nigerians to ransom have stubbornly refused to obey these court orders.”
The group insists El-Zakzaky did not commit treasonable felony to deserve his continued incarceration.
Meanwhile, the police had attempted to stop the protesters, but they were said to have been prevented by a superior order.
The group had staged a peaceful protest to the National Human Rights Commission on Friday, August 4, to press for the immediate release of their leader.
The convener of the protest, S.I Ahmad, while speaking at the protest said, “today, it is known to the world that Shaikh Zakzaky and his wife Zeenah Ibraheem have been in detention without charge for 600 days following a brutal crackdown on his supporters by the Nigerian Army in which soldiers killed hundreds of men, women and children in Zaria.”
