Air travel to Africa has risen sharply in 2017. A report by ForwardKeys, analyzing the seat capacity for travel to the top ten international airports in Africa revealed some encouraging news for Africa, but some disheartening news for Nigeria.
Jon Howell the Managing Director of AviaDev, which is Africa’s leading airline route development conference, said: “One of the major reasons for falling arrivals by air to Nigeria, is the fact that many airlines could not repatriate funds after the currency crisis in 2016.
“As a result, Iberia and United Airlines have ceased operations to Nigeria, whilst Emirates and the other foreign carriers have scaled back services.
“The Nigerian airlines have suffered too and so this void has been filled by the ever-opportunistic Ethiopian Airlines, who began serving their fifth Nigerian destination, Kaduna on 1st August 2017 and are now the largest carrier in the Nigerian market.”

1. Johannesburg, South Africa
O. R. Tambo International Airport is a major international airport in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, South Africa, near the city of Johannesburg. It has the highest number of air traffic in Africa based on scheduled seats for August – December 2017.
2. Cairo, Egypt
Cairo International Airport is the international airport of Cairo and the busiest in Egypt and serves as the primary hub for EgyptAir, EgyptAir Express and Nile Air as well as several other airlines.
It has the second highest number of scheduled seats for air travel in Africa.

3. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Addis Ababa Bole International Airport based the city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It is located in the Bole area, 6 km southeast of the city centre and 65 km north of Debre Zeyit. And it comes in third with the second highest number of seats for international travel.
4. Casablanca, Morocco
The Mohammed V International Airport is an airport located in Nouasseur, a suburb 30 km south-east of Casablanca. It comes fourth.
5. Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town International Airport is the primary airport serving the city of Cape Town, and is the second-busiest airport in South Africa and third-busiest in Africa.

6. Nairobi, Kenya
The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is an international airport in Nairobi, the capital of and largest city in Kenya. The airport has the highest number seats scheduled for international travel.
7. Algiers, Algeria
Houari Boumediene Airport, also known as Algiers Airport or Algiers International Airport, is an international airport serving Algiers, the capital of Algeria.
8. Tunis, Tunisia
Tunis–Carthage Airport is the international airport of Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. It serves as the home base for Tunisair, Tunisair Express, Nouvelair Tunisia, and Tunisavia.
9. Durban, South Africa
Durban International Airport was the international airport of Durban from 1951 until 2010, when it was replaced by King Shaka International Airport, 60 kilometres to the north. The airport is co-located with AFB Durban.
10. Lagos, Nigeria
Murtala Muhammed International Airport is an international airport located in Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria, and is the major airport serving the entire state.
