Calls for the release of El-Zakzaky grows louder after 600 days in detention

– The Islamic Movement in Nigeria is not a group to be shoved aside

– The group has been consistent in its demand for the release of their leader, Shaikh El-Zakzaky

– The group is popularly known as Shiites in Nigeria

The Shiite group has for the umpteenth time staged a protest in Abuja demanding for the release of their leader, Shaikh El-Zakzaky and his wife Zeenah Ibraheem.

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that the group staged a peaceful protest to the National Human Rights Commission on Friday, August 4, to press for the immediate release of their leader.

The convener of the protest, S.I Ahmad, while speaking at the protest said, “today, it is known to the world that Shaikh Zakzaky and his wife Zeenah Ibraheem have been in detention without charge for 600 days following a brutal crackdown on his supporters by the Nigerian Army in which soldiers killed hundreds of men, women and children in Zaria.”

Ahmad said the protest to NHRC is due to the fact that the commission is saddled with the protection of human rights, but he added that their rights are being infringed upon and should be looked into.

He picked holes at the claim by the Department of State Security (DSS) who said that El-Zakzaky was being kept in the DSS protective

custody and have spent five million naira on his health alone.

He called for the unconditional release of El-Zakzaky and added that he should be given good health treatment.

His words: “We will not stop calling for the unconditional release of our leader Shaikh Zakzaky and his wife and all others in detention for 600 days now. The continued detention is a gross violation of their fundamental human rights.”

Responding, the acting executive secretary, NHRC Mrs Oti Ovrawah said the commission will forward their request to the appropriate quarters and their demands will be looked into in due course.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has recovered the items of some staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) as well as that of University of Maiduguri on oil exploration in Borno state who were ambushed and killed by some Boko Haram terrorists alongside the troops escorting them.

The Nigerian Army also recovered additional bodies of 5 soldiers, 11 Civilian JTF and 5 members of the exploration team.
