The first mention of the term ‘unity school’ in Nigeria dates back to the 1966. That year, three unity schools, or Federal Government colleges were established. Those were the colleges in Okposi (Eastern region), Sokoto (Northern region) and Warri (Midwestern region).

As the country struggled with the idea of unity, the purpose of these schools was to connect children from different regions. This way, kids could communicate with their peers from all over the country and foster their feeling of national identity. Federal unity schools offered the best facilities, the most qualified teachers and the greatest education any secondary school student could have dreamed of.

However, the name ‘unity school’ does not mean what it used to mean before. For example, not all Federal Government colleges offer the same high quality of education. Some are, quite frankly, below average. Nevertheless, we want to tell you about top ten best schools in Nigeria, whose students show great results at their secondary school exams.

Below you can find a list of unity schools in Nigeria that have proven to be the best in the country. The school’s position on this list was determined by the results of secondary school exams by West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in 2014/2015. Unfortunately, we could not find data that is more recent.

Apart from being judged based on the WAEC results, all of the colleges were rated based on the results of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), National Examination Council (NECO), National Business Certificate (NBC), National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) and National Technical Examination (NTC).

In the category of BECE/NECO, the best performing schools were:
