Editor’s Note: Israel Eshenakpe Akpodoro is President of Niger Delta Ex- Agitators, a former militant group in the Niger Delta. In this letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, he commended the president for two special projects, the proposed modular refineries and the $20billion proposed industrial gas park in Ogidigben, Delta state.
Your Excellency, on behalf of the leadership of the National Coalition for Niger Delta Ex-Agitators, NCNDE-A, I wish to congratulate you and fellow Niger Deltans on the ongoing peace process in the Delta region and the template to sustain the much needed peace in the region especially the laudable ideals of the proposed modular refineries and the $20bn proposed industrial gas park.
We dare say these two gigantic projects are life changing as it is capable of removing our youth population permanently from the streets of Nigeria which will enable them to meaningfully contribute their quota to both regional and national development.
Such proposals if achieved as planned is a road map to a new lease of life to the good people of the Niger Delta region in terms of human and material development.
President Muhammadu Buhari
The Coalition commends you, President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in your efforts at fulfilling the party’s campaign promises to the people in entirely novel fashion. We wish you more power to your elbow as you lead us into a new Nigeria where the social contract binding the leaders and the led are carefully executed without let or hindrance.
However, it is of note that this coalition of ex-agitators comprising prominent Ex-militant leaders across the region has been in the forefront of bringing lasting peace in our region and our efforts in this direction can’t be over emphasized, right from the electioneering campaigns to the inauguration of our president who we rolled out our machineries for his victory at the Presidential election. Since then we have been doing everything within our powers as a group to shore up the popularity of this administration amongst our people.
Also, as a group we were at the vanguard of the campaign against the hostilities of ethnic militias who sabotage our national patrimony, forcing them into the negotiating table with the federal government, the result of which we are beginning to feel in the oil and gas – rich Niger Delta region.
READ ALSO: Osinbajo activates $20bn Ogidigben gas industrial project in Niger Delta
As a group, we noticed exclusion by the federal government in the peace process as our leadership was not invited to the negotiating table as major stakeholders in the process of ensuring lasting peace. By this medium we protest our exclusion because we have implicit confidence that the federal government has what it takes to do it better.
Additionally, our teaming members till date have been denied engagement by the government we worked for as foot soldiers right from the campaign field to inauguration and we have nothing to show for our support for the APC led government.
Israel Eshanekpe Akpodoro
When it was not fashionable to mention APC in the Niger Delta region, we were there with then General Buhari all the way.
During the era of impunity laced with regional loyalty for the then incumbent, the NCNDE-A defied all odds to support President Buhari and his utter ego – Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.
Today, the government we worked and live for has persistently left us in the limbo as our members are left without empowerment, no patronage of any kind as against the known norm of rewarding loyalty and support.
We have been abandoned by the government we helped to put in place. This government has denied us our rightful place in the scheme of things, especially in the area of empowering our group.

In view of the above, we still have that deep seated confidence in us that the President and his team have conscience and would deem it appropriate to place us in the right position particularly engaging our members favourably because we worked for their emergence.
The President Buhari led federal government owes us a duty of patronage. We need our 17,000 members to be empowered and meaningfully engaged.
While we await a positive response from the administration, we wish to appreciate the good work being done by the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, who has been able to responsibly fill the would – have been vacuum created by the vacation of our amiable President.
Professor Osinbajo has redefined loyalty, humility, respect, responsiveness, reliability, dependability in the discharge of his duties and to Nigerians, we are grateful.
As we humbly await favourable response from the federal government, we wish President Buhari a quick recovery and safe return home soon.
Thanks and God bless.
Eshanekpe Israel Akpodoro was a former militant in the Niger Delta. He was among those who surrendered during the amnesty offered in 2009 by late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. he is the National President of NCNDE-A

The Presidency on Tuesday reacted to the review of the economy by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), saying the report indicated that the economy was coming out of recession.
“There are now indications that the Nigerian economy is well on its way out of recession considering the 2016 overall and last quarter Gross Domestic Product reports,’’ the Presidential Adviser on Economic Matters, Dr Adeyemi Dipeolu, said in a statement.
A review of the recent GDP figures released by the NBS shows a contraction of -1.30 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2016, translating into an estimated economic growth rate of -1.51 per cent for the full year.

Dipeolu said the Nigerian economy actually performed better overall last year as the growth rate was higher with a contraction at -1.5 per cent than the -1.8 per cent predicted by the IMF.
He said the report had raised the hope that Nigeria was gradually coming out of recession with the improving trends in several key sectors of the economy including agriculture and mining.
The presidential aide said the Buhari administration was also hopeful that with the series of ongoing engagement with the oil-producing communities of the Niger Delta, the increased oil production output would be sustained.
He added that the ongoing implementation of the Social Investment Programmes and significant infrastructural spending of the Federal Government would spur a positive multiplier effect on the Nigerian economy.
He said same effect was expected from the possible early legislative passage of the 2017 budget.
“The Buhari administration will not relent in its determined effort and its comprehensive approach to bring about the full recovery of the Nigerian economy and set it on a solid path of sustainable growth.
“Our work continues and we renew the pledge to do it with diligence, and the firm commitment it deserves,’’ he said.

– There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari’s long stay in London could be as a result of Crohn’s Disease, a medical condition that has affected his digestive system

There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari’s long stay in London could be as a result of Crohn’s Disease, a medical condition that has affected his digestive system.
President Muhammadu Buhari and his daughter in London
SaharaReporters reports that a source familiar with President Muhammadu Buhari’s medical treatment in London revealed that, apart from a lingering prostrate flare-up and other chronic conditions, the president has also recently been battling with a persistent “internal organ” problem.

According to the source, Mr Buhari had had parts of his colon removed in 2013 and also had another operation to have hemorrhoids, swollen veins near the human re*ctum, removed in 2016 in London during one of his secret trips to seek urgent medical treatment.
The latest revelation appears to validate a claim by Mr Buhari’s wife, Aisha Buhari, to the effect that her husband was dealing with “internal organ failure.”
It was reported that: “several doctors in Nigeria and the UK said that Mr Buhari was an outpatient, indicated a condition consistent with Crohn’s disease.
“Two of the doctors stated that it was likely that President Buhari’s course of treatment for his prostrate and other issues led to a complication and worsening of his Crohn’s disease.
Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract, leading to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition.
Inflammation caused by the disease can affect different areas of the digestive tract in different patients, but it was disclosed that the disease usually occurs in the intestines, where the inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease often spreads deep into the layers of affected bowel tissue.
Doctors also revealed that Crohn’s disease can be both painful and debilitating, and sometimes may lead to life-threatening complications. “When it occurs in younger people, there is a higher chance of future complications than in older patients,” one doctor told our correspondent. He added that the disease “often worsens with age.”

According to the doctors consulted for this report, while there is no known cure for Crohn’s disease, palliative therapies can greatly reduce its signs and symptoms and even bring about long-term remission. Some of the doctors stressed that, with proper treatment and management, many patients with Crohn’s disease are able to function well.
The doctors stated that the cause of Crohn’s disease is largely unknown. However, one doctor said the condition was likely due to an abnormal response of the immune system. Food or bacteria in the intestines, or even the lining of the bowel, may cause the uncontrolled inflammation associated with Crohn’s disease.

The doctors disclosed that the inheritance pattern of Crohn’s disease was also unclear, noting that several genetic and environmental factors are often at play in the occurrence of the disease. According to one doctor, the condition tends to “cluster in families.”
He explained that having an affected family member was deemed to constitute a significant risk factor for the disease.

He listed some agricultural produce that would be boosted in the project to include cassava, rice, wheat and maize among others.
The director noted that the bank had also introduced a programme known as `Feed Africa’ to reduce the level of food imports across the African continent.

Ojukwu said the project would also help to catalyse additional financing through innovative methods and ensure enabling environment by government.

“The idea behind `Feed Africa’, is to reduce the level of imports.
“Africa imports over 35.4 billion dollars of food annually and if not checked, in the next ten years it will rise to 110 billion dollars annually.
“Our bank came up with this programme which is focusing on 18 commodity value chains like wheat, rice, cassava and a number of tree crops that Africa spends so much money importing.
The director said that it would also encourage and ensure the involvement of women and young people in agriculture.
“All these programmes we are putting together are to ensure that agriculture in Africa is transformed.’’
The Support to Agricultural Research for Development of Strategic Crops (SARD-SC) project of the bank is geared toward enhancing economic growth, food security and nutrition contributing to poverty reduction in Africa.

“If there is no peace in Southern Kaduna, there is no way Kaduna State will be in peace. We must stay together so long as God brought us as one.
“Southern Kaduna is faced with the problem of Christians and Muslims that has been there for years, clashes between farmers and herdsmen, visitors and indigenes and people who hide in the bush to attack innocent people at night for no reason.
“What is happening now in Southern Kaduna has happened in Birnin Gwari, Zamfara and other parts of the state.
“There must be a holistic approach in stemming the situation. A poor Man in Southern Kaduna is faced with the same problem with a man from Zaria which is caused by corruption.
“During Saudauna, there was no difference between a Kataf man, a man from Kano and a man from Katsina but today showing difference has grown to be a cancer in our generation.”
Senator Sani urged Barnawa APC elders to be conscious of some political leaders who do not care about their wellbeing, stressing that very soon; they would start seeing them and their posters.
“The colossal amount of money being spent on the media to attack and insult Comrade Shehu Sani is enough to do good project,” he noted.
He advised the elders to deliberate and come up with a project that would benefit the entire Barnawa community.
The elders in their different submission thanked the Senator for identifying with them, saying: “We have not benefited anything from this government. We are facing challenges of our youth unemployment and Women not being empowered.”

Adeseun, who based the figure on the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) ranking of health system, as well as, the 2013 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), said the nation’s health status was low.
The director said that the major determinants or indicators of a nation’s health status were under- five and maternal mortality rates.
Adeseun explained that based on the 2013 NDHS report; there had been little reduction in the under-five and maternal mortality rate.
He said that in the area of under-five mortality rate, there was little reduction from 154 in 2008 to the current 128 per 1,000 live births.
According to him, the adoption of best practice as recommended by WHO is the surest way to reduce this burden to the barest minimum.
He said that the standard practices included the adoption of Amoxicillin dispersible tablet as a first line treatment for childhood pneumonia and Zinc ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution or Therapy) for diarrhoea.
“The overall status of health of Nigerians as measured by WHO ranking of health systems is poor.
“When we say it is poor, it is because the major indicators, which are the determinant of the health status of the people, are in the area of child health.
“As at 2013, for every 1,000 children born, 128 of them are likely to die before the age of five; this means that one in every eight children born will not live to see their fifth birthday.
“To further demonstrate how significant it is in terms of number of lives lost, it translates to the fact that 800,000 children under the age of five die in Nigeria every year.
“To visualise this number is to look at our biggest stadium, which probably contains about 60,000 people at maximum capacity.’’
Adeseun also condemned the country’s maternal mortality rate of 550 per 100,000 live births.
According to him, the figure is shocking and can be avoided through the implementation of policies and adequate funding.
“It should never be the case that a woman dies simply from under-going a natural process of child birth, which is one of the biggest killers of maternal mortality.
“It is in this regard that poor health outcomes facing the child and the mother in particular reflect the poor status of health of Nigeria,’’ Adeseun said.
He urged government at all levels to adopt proven effective intervention policies to improve the health status of the people.

Publishers need to step up and be more careful with what they publish. Google and Facebook need to penalize people who publish fake stories. Bloggers and journalists also need to self-regulate. It’s not one person’s task.
Q: Have you spoken with the president?
A: No comment. I have chosen not to comment. Humans have always been social people. People need to be educated on what is fake news or not. We need to know what people are consuming and give that to them.

Chief Michael Ade-Ojo, chairman, Toyota Nigeria Limited
This was disclosed by the chairman, Toyota Nigeria Limited, Chief Michael Ade-Ojo in Lagos recently.
Ade-Ojo made the disclosure at the unveiling of an automobile assembling plant dedicated to the production of two vehicle brands, Toyota and JAC, with a target of 15,000 vehicles yearly.

“The semi-knocked down parts have yet to come; but in a few months’ time, they’ll arrive here in Lagos and we’ll invite guests to come and be part of history, to witness the unveiling of locally-assembled Toyota cars,” Ade-Ojo said.
Though the section reserved for the production of Toyota cars has yet to commence operation, the JAC division has produced its first set of 10 vehicles.
Elizade Autoland Limited, a subsidiary of Elizade Nigeria Limited, owned by Ade-Ojo, has the franchise for the JAC brand of vehicles.
Ade-Ojo described JAC as a “junior brother of Toyota in Nigeria and it is growing.”
Also speaking, the managing director of Elizade Nigeria, Mr Demola Ade-Ojo said the plan is to produce 20 JAC vehicles every month, adding that it was starting with the SKD stage and hoped to move to the completely-knocked down section when sufficient components could be sourced locally.
The plant, which is currently operating on a single shift, was said to have been certified by the federal government to build different brands of cars.
Toyota Nigeria last year presented its first locally assembled bus, Hiace, to the motoring public as a confirmation that it had joined the league of auto firms that had embraced the federal government’s auto policy introduced in 2013 to encourage local production of vehicles.
At least 30 automakers have sought and received the federal government’s approval to set up vehicle assembly plants in Nigeria. But some of them that have commenced operations are complaining of low patronage.
The National Automotive Industry Development Plan, according to the government, is to generate employment, boost Gross Domestic Product, and promote the Small Medium and Enterprises in the sector as well as aid skills development and transfer of technology.

– There is desperation among citizens of less developed countries including the African continent to travel to European countries
– The United Nations says Nigeria and Eritrea now top the list of those travelling through dangerous routes just to get to Europe
Nigeria is one of the countries that has the highest number of citizens who desperately take dangerous routes just to get to Europe, a report from the office of the UN high commissioner for refugees has said.
These migrants desperately take dangerous routes according to the report
There are constant reports of migrants drowning while on illegal routes abroad. While releasing the new report titled: ‘Desperate Journeys’, the UNHCR director of Europe Bureau, Vincent Cochetel, said these migrants make use of people who smuggle them into Europe or take boats not meant for such journeys.
“About 90 percent of them travelled by boat from Libya, and the top two nationalities of those arriving were Nigerians (21 per cent) and Eritreans (11 per cent).

“This route is particularly dangerous and in 2016, more deaths were recorded at sea than ever before. Furthermore, children making this journey are especially vulnerable, and the number of unaccompanied and separated children arriving is increasing.
“Last year more than 25,000 came, representing 14 percent of all new arrivals in Italy. Their number more than doubled compared to the previous year,” Cochetel warned adding that the report shows that people continued to move but undertook more diversified and dangerous journeys, often relying on smugglers because of the lack of accessible legal ways to Europe.
“In total, some 181,436 people arrived in Italy in 2016 by sea, out of which 90 percent travelled by boat from Libya.
“Those who came to Italy in 2016 include people in need of international protection, and also victims of trafficking and migrants seeking better lives.
“The top two nationalities of those arriving in Italy were Nigerians (21 percent) and Eritreans (11 percent). A striking feature is the increasing number of unaccompanied and separated children making the journey, over 25,000 in 2016.

“The journey to Italy is particularly dangerous, with more deaths at sea in the Mediterranean recorded in 2016 than ever before.
“Of the 5,096 refugees and migrants reported dead or missing at sea last year, 90% travelled along the sea route to Italy, amounting to one death for every 40 people crossing,” the report said.
Nigerian bankers have a lot of work to do in order to be on the same page with the ‘smarter banking’ the industry is trying to preach.
Many Nigerians have headache when they think of the torture they will be subjected to in the banking halls if they have to visit their banks to lodge a complaint.
Standing on the queue in a banking hall can change your perspective about banking.
In this present age and time, is it not possible to step into the bank and get done within the next fifteen minutes of entering? The banking system in Nigeria is a highly faulted when it comes to quick and easy transactions.
The transitioning into the online banking phase was highly welcomed even though the in-bank transactions are still as traditional as ever. You basically have to shift your weight from one leg to the other while you wait on the long queue that can make you think the kingdom of God should not be hard to get into.
After standing on the queue for as long as possible, you may be met with some gruesome looking banker that looks tired and unwilling to give you the customer-banker reception that will comfort you for standing on the queue for as long as possible.
Some bankers can make you lose interest in some banking brands.
Going to the bank is a dreaded event for many people as they do not look forward to the experience at all. On a few occasions, the bankers are as sharp as the colour on the walls of their bank with the way they see to the complaints.
Ideally, banking should not be a big deal. However, Nigerian bankers make it look like they are doing you a favour by giving you access to your hard-earned money.
And if you are thinking of using the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) on some days, please, just make sure you have a cup of ice-cream to make you feel better while you stand on the queue.
Moving forward, let’s share with you some ways Nigerian bankers can add to your frustration in the banking hall:
1. Perpetual time wasters
You may end up sitting for hours in the banking hall if you get attended to by a slow banker.
Some Nigerian bankers will make you wonder if wearing a high heel shoe is by fire or by force with the way they keep moving around the banking hall.
On days that you are frustrated, the clicking sound of the shoes could tick you off the more when you are on edge and out of time.
Telling yourself you will leave the bank when God says is the best prepping message ever. You will not be disappointed if you end up leaving after two hours.

2. When they make your complaint ‘serious’
A lot of things happen over the weekend. We have people getting their ATM cards jammed in the machine, we also have people getting debited without being paid and those who never received money sent to them during the week.
The list of complaints is endless; but you can be sure that some bankers will make it serious when they hide under ‘protocols and procedures’. The jammed ATM card may have to be collected at your branch in Bauchi even though it got seized in a machine at Ikeja.
The antidote is to have a sachet of paracetamol in your bag when going. You cannot come an’ kill yourself.
3. Bankers are living proofs that monotony is a killer of drive and passion
If you ever get hooked in a hot debate about monotony killing passion and drive, do not sweat over it. Visiting the bank will make you see beyond the horizon and change your mind.
Doing the same thing should make you get better every day; however, it gets to a time when your productivity starts to decline. Economists will understand this better!
Some bankers lose their sharpness over time. They become undaunted by customer’s complaints and make you return to the bank for a matter that could be laid to rest almost immediately.
4. Some of them are nonchalant
Many Nigerian bankers are lackadaisical when it comes to delivering in the bank. The internet is always an excuse to be as slow as possible.
And if you meet them when they are in an awry state, they may snap and make you look like you are not being considerate.
And because you cannot see their laptop screen, you will have to wait till heaven breathes an air of release unto them. The best you can do here is to breathe in and out; this will help your heart.
5. They make their work a big deal
Having some Nigerian bankers attend to you will make you wonder if you are being unserious with your job.
Every job has its specifications and technicalities; some bankers attach so much importance to being in their office.
You are most likely to feel ‘jobless’ while clamoring for attention in the banking hall. Dear brother, please endure it. You will be vindicated at the end of the day.

6. When you are being schooled on the queue
Some banks are known for the long queues customers have to wait on.
A banker once asked a customer to step back in line because she had not summoned her. The moment the customer went back to the queue, she called her to step forward again. It was not a fair treatment but some Nigerian bankers are that mean.
Once they are on their seats, they assume the position of the alpha and omega of your bank account. Your best option is to brace yourself before entering the banking hall. Be prepared not to let any banker tamper with your mood.
You may get lucky by meeting the ones that will give you an extraordinary banking experience. Choose your bank wisely.
