6 facts to know about senate suspension of Ali Ndume (photos)

The Nigerian Senate has suspended former majority leader Ali Ndume for six months for bringing unproven allegations against his colleagues Senator Dino Melaye and Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Below are some facts about his suspension from the Senate:

1. Who is Ali Ndume?

Mohammed Ali Ndume is a Nigerian politician who was a member of the Federal House of Representatives from 2003 to 2011. He was elected to the Senate for Borno South, Borno State, Nigeria in April 2011 running on the People’s Democratic Party ticket.

2. Relationship with Jonathan

Ndume was appointed to a committee established by President Goodluck Jonathan to consider opening talks with Boko Haram. He said that a military approach would not be effective due to the impossibility of identifying the target.

3. Accused of link with Boko Haram

In his view the violence would continue until the group felt they had been heard and saw that the problems of poverty and unemployment were being addressed. In November 2011, Senator Ndume was reported to be linked to Boko Haram.

This alleged connection to Boko Haram was made following the Nigerian State Security Service’s interrogation of a suspected Boko Haram member and spokesman, Mallam Ali Konduga.

4. Bukola Saraki

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that the move is one of the recommendations of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges which probed the allegations of certificate forgery against Melaye and avenging of seized bulletproof Range Rover against Saraki.

5. Why he was suspended

The report, which was signed by two-thirds of the committee, cleared Saraki and Melaye of any wrongdoing but suspended Ndume for failing to conduct proper investigation before making the allegations.

6. What Ndume did wrong

According to the committee, Ndume was the one that dragged Saraki’s name into the matter of the seized bulletproof Range Rover based on a false report he acquired from social media.
