“Our attention has been drawn to the publication with the caption: “Soldiers abdicate duties, harass, brutalize university students in Delta”, authored by one Austin Oyibode.

“ Also in the said publication, one Comrade Tomi Akporoghene was mentioned as the president of faculty of social sciences who accused the soldiers of the 222 Battalion of the Nigerian Army of intimidating and harassing the students of Delta State University, Abraka.

“We wish to call the attention of the students of Delta State University, Abraka Community and environs, the Army and University authorities and the general public that such publication which was aimed at denting the good image of the soldiers posted to Abraka and its environs, is false, malicious and a wicked act calculated at tarnishing the good image of the solders and frustrating their efforts at maintaining law and order in the University and its environs.

“We want to clearly state here that there are no such names as “Austin Oyibode” and “Comrade Tomi Akproghene” mentioned in the said publication among the students of Delta State University, Abraka. The names are fictitious and fraudulent to mislead the students and indeed the general public to cause panic and tension in the University community and its environs.

“Again the phone number “08132710291” quoted in the said publication is not registered in the MTN subscribers list and as at the time of this publication, the said number remained switched off.

“It will interest the target audience and members of the general public that before the advent of the soldiers in Abraka and its environs, there had been frequent reports of armed-robbery, murder, cultism and other social vices in the University community and its environs.

“However, since the arrival of the soldiers such social ills had been drastically reduced to the barest minimum due to the successes recorded by the soldiers in protecting lives and properties and restoring peace to Abraka community and its environs.

“We want to put the records straight that the men of the Nigerian Army posted to Abraka Community and its environs are charged with the responsibility of maintaining law and order, securing and protecting lives and properties and had at no time neither intimated nor harassed any student or members of the public in Abraka and its environs, talkless of brutalizing.

“For the avoidance of doubt, soldiers posted to Abraka and its environs never had any fuss with any student or students’ body, members of staff and the general public.

“The Management of Delta State University, Abraka will like to use this medium to commend the efforts of the 222 Battalion of the Nigerian Army for their frank efforts towards restoring peace and sanity to Abraka community and indeed its environs.

“The students of Delta State University, Abraka, members of staff and the general public are hereby informed to disregard the said publication which is purely malicious, false and wicked act aimed at tarnishing the good works of the soldiers and thereby discouraging them.

“The social miscreants in our midst are angry that they no longer have room to carry out their mischievous activities, because Abraka and its environs is no longer a safe place for them; hence they resorted to cheap blackmail, which will not help them in any way.
