Nigerian students attacked by locals in India: 7 things you need to know about what happened (see photos)

Nigerian students were attacked on Monday, March 27, by a mob inside a shopping mall in Nodia.

The attacks were prompted by the death of a 19-year-old India student who died of a suspected drug overdose.

Nigerians were accused of giving the victim, Manish Khari, 16, a Class 12 student in Greater Noida’s NSG Black Cats, the drugs.

Indian authorities have on ordered an investigation into the attack and no fewer than five persons involved in the violence have been arrested.

1. Following the death of Khari, the police picked up five Nigerians and confiscated their passports, but released them because of lack of evidence.

2. Locals were holding a peaceful protest on Monday until they reached Pari Chowk and sighted some Africans in the market. They went out of control beating up many black people.

3. One of the Nigerian victims said they were beaten with rods, bricks and knives and no one tried to help or even call the police.

4. Two Nigerian siblings attacked by the mob suffered facial injuries and minor fractures.

5. Following the incident, several Nigerian students, who study in colleges, universities spread across Greater Noida skipped their classes today as the Association of African Students of India, asked African students in Noida to stay at home.

6. Africans have alleged that the incident was a racial attack but the district administration has refused to describe the incident as hate crime as it was not pre-planned but happened in the spur of the moment.

7. A meeting is being between local RWAs, colleges and Nigerian students’ representatives to maintain peace in the area.

Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj has promised “immediate action” after a Nigerian student begged her for help, saying living in the area had become a “life-threatening issue”.

She said: “I have spoken to Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh about the attack. He has assured that there will be fair and impartial investigation into this unfortunate incident.”
