The fifth edition of the prestigious Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) took place yesterday, Saturday March 4 at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island Lagos.
To say the awards went well was an understatement. Celebrities, fans and industry professionals all came together to celebrate Nollywood.

And while some celebrities who won awards at the event were expected (e.g. Funke Akindele walking home with the Best Comedy Series), others were a tad surprising.
Like when Funke Akindele-Bello won Best TV Show for Jenifa’s Diary. Somkele Idhalama’s trailblazer win wasn’t a surprise. The budding actress has continued to wow both critics and fans alike with each performance. She went home with a car from GAC motors.
76, the period war film starring Rita Dominic and Ramsey Nouah went home with the award for Best Movie and Best Director for Izu Ojukwu. Again, this was expected as there was almost no objection to the film. Most critics loved it.

One award everyone agreed with was Chief Chika Okpala aka Zebrudayya of The New Masquerade fame going home with the award for AMVCA’s Industry Merit Award. He also received a car from GAC motors.
Rita Dominic also went home with the award for Best Actress in a Drama for her role in 76. Imeh Bishop aka Okon to the surprise of many took home the award for Best Actor in a Comedy for his role in the filmThe Boss Is Mine.

All in all, this year’s AMVCA was a success kudos to Multichoice and Africa Magic. I can’t wait to see for next year’s show. And to all the winners and nominees, kudos, Nollywood can only get better from this point on.
