Police to deploy 500 trucks, 3 choppers during Abuja airport closure

– The Nigerian police has said it will deploy 500 police trucks to man Abuja-Kaduna Expressway during the period the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport will be shut

– The police will also station three choppers in Minna, Niger state during the period

– Also, armed officials will escort trains from Abuja to Kaduna and vice versa during the closure

The police will be deploying 500 trucks, 3 choppers during Abuja airport closure

The Nigeria police has said it will deploy as many facilities as possible to ensure safety of travelers on Abuja to Kaduna Expressway, News Agency of Nigerian reports.

The police said it will deploy 500 trucks and to patrol 170 kilometre during the 6-week closure of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Speaking on police preparation for the airport closure and the transportation of travelers to Kaduna from Abuja, the deputy inspector general of police Habila Joshak said the police vans will be spread throughout the expressway.

He also said three police choppers will be stationed in Minna, Niger state.

The choppers, Joshak said will be used for aerial patrol on the Abuja-Kaduna road.

He also noted that train marshals will be used to escort travelers using the train from Abuja to Kaduna.

Joshak explained that each train will be accompanied by armed officers on each coach.

Meanwhile, the Senate has failed to stop the minister of aviation and other stakeholders from shutting down the Abuja airport for six weeks.

The senators had earlier said it does not think there is any need for the airport to be shut for repairs as planned.

But speaking during a panel with the lawmakers, a managing director with Julius Berger Construction Company said repairs on Abuja airport’s runway will take nothing less than two years if not shut down.

The Julius Berger managing director said: “It can be shut down in the night. The spot can be repaired in the morning and temporarily given back for usage.”
