The University of Ibadan is one of the oldest and the most prestigious universities in the whole African continent. The University of Ibadan awarded the first postgraduate degree about 64 years ago, in 1952 when it was called a University College.
It worked under the scheme of some special relationships with the famous University of London. Already in1962, the University College managed to transform into the modern University of Ibadan. At first, 64 people registered to get the higher degrees, they transferred their registration to the new University of Ibadan.

In 1963, the Senate of the University of Ibadan decided to create the Higher Degrees Committee. It had to administer all the higher degree programs. After a while, the number of higher degrees applicants increased and it was clear that very cumbersome procedure, which was involved in the long-term processing of postgraduate matters from Faculty Boards of Studies through Faculty Boards and then to the Higher Degrees Committee and just after that, to Senate. It often took a year to pass the long road to Senate.
In 1976, Senate decided to approve the Board of Postgraduate Studies reorganization. Senate upgraded it in its status to new School of Postgraduate Studies. Senate approved The Postgraduate School.
