18-year-old Zeenat was allegedly doused with kerosene and set alight in June last year in Pakistan’s capital Lahore, a little over a week after she wed 20-year-old motorcycle mechanic Hassan Khan against her family’s wishes.

Hasan Khan’s ethnicity was the main cause of the family’s disapproval. Hassan is from the Pashtun tribe while Zeenat was a Punjabi.
The mother tied the 18-year-old daughter to a cot with the help of her son (victim’s brother) before dousing her in kerosene and setting her alight in the family home in Lahore, Eastern Pakistan.
Bibi then went outside and began shouting on the street to neighbours that she had killed the teen for bringing shame on her family, while beating her chest.

Naseem Bibi, the murderer’s younger sister, in the aftermath of the killing said: “After killing her daughter, Perveen went out on the street, took off her shawl and started beating herself on her chest, shouting: ‘People! I have killed my daughter for misbehaving and giving our family a bad name.
“My sister declared a long time ago she would not allow her daughter to marry a Pashtun.”
Zeenat’s vicious murder has exhumed fresh calls for action against so-called “honour killings” which is common in Pakistan.

Hundreds of women are killed by their relatives each year after allegedly bringing shame on their families in the deeply conservative Muslim country.
Meanwhile, the family of a young Nigerian woman identified as Mrs Oluwashola Atunrayo Gaska (nee Adefolalu) has cried out after her husband cremated her without informing them.
Following the shady details surrounding her death and cremation, Sholly’s family have reportedly reached out to the Polish authorities, the Federal Government and other relevant authorities, seeking for help in investigating the real reason why their daughter’s body was quickly disposed of without their permission.
