Aliyu lamented that the HIV funding landscape in Nigeria is changing, adding that states should begin to take responsibility for their citizens living with HIV.
He said: “70% of our National Response is Donor funded. Private sector only accounts for about 2%. We, FG and States need to start moving away from development funds.”
Meanwhile, a professor of haematology and transfusion medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Professor Suleiman Akanmu has revealed that out of the 3.2 million people reportedly suffering from HIV in Nigeria, only 900,000 have access to treatment.
The situation is currently raising concerns especially with a growing incidence of resistance to anti-retroviral medications in the country.
