TENSION as lack of trust, betrayal mars NLC Abuja protest

The Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is currently in a closed door meeting with leaders of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The meeting between Osinbajo and leaders of the group follows a protest which was organized by NLC and TUC in two major cities – Abuja and Lagos – in Nigeria.

During the Abuja protest, immediately the protesters in scores arrived at the gate of the Presidential Villa, a protocol officer from the vice president’s office announced that only leaders will be allowed for a meeting with Osinbajo.

The protocol officer – a lady – who arrived the venue of the protest with two white Toyota Hiace buses with inscriptions, Aso Villa Shuttle, also allowed five journalist from different television stations.

However, following the announcement by the officers, other members of the group, again, began a mild protest.

The group said they feared that the leaders who have been asked to meet with the vice president might betray the union.

But in his response the national president of the NLC told the group to calm down.

Ayuba Wabba also promised the protesters of his complete loyalty to the union.

He said: “Calm down comrades, we are going to meet the vice president on all our behalf, it is not good that we are outside here.”

It is a good that we’ve been called to have this meeting with vice president,” Ayuba said.
