The Newspaper Headlines for Wednesday, February 8, have focused on the police recovery of N111.3 million from 23 Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials who conducted the December 10, 2016 rerun in Rivers state, the presidency’s preparation to send the name of Justice Walter Onnoghen to the Senate for confirmation as the CJN this week, amongst other top stories.
According to a report on Vanguard, the police said yesterday, February 7, that they recovered N111.3 million from 23 Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials who conducted the December 10, 2016 rerun in Rivers state.
The cash, they claimed, is part of the N360 million bribe allegedly paid by Governor Nyesom Wike to compromise electoral and security officials for his party’s candidates to win.
The unnamed officials have been indicted for their involvement in the violence that occurred during the election, the police said.

Six policemen indicted for their role during the election have been dismissed. They are to be prosecuted.
This is part of the report of the Joint Investigation Panel constituted by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris on December 22, 2016, to probe the violence that led to the killing of two policemen during the election.
The report was submitted to the IG at the Force Headquarters in Abuja yesterday.
But in a swift response, the Rivers state government rejected the report as “malicious, defamatory and reckless”.
The state government denied all the claims by the panel and accused the police of being biased, The Nation reports.
In reaction to the report, Dr Austin Tam-George, the commissioner for information and communication, in a statement described allegations of the police as shameful, defamatory and reckless in the extreme.
Moving on, acting president Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has assured Nigerians that the current economic recession will soon become history, The Punch reports.
He said in a statement on Tuesday, February 7, “With complete focus on improving the economy every day, the recession will soon be history.”
While referring to Monday’s protests in different parts of the country against the economic hardship in the country, Osinbajo commended the Inspector General of Police and his officers for handling the protests with professionalism and respect for the rights of the citizens.

He said: “We are committed to a continuous engagement with our people to explain government policies, and receive advice and criticism.
“Cabinet ministers have gone round eight states so far, holding town hall meetings, the most recent was in Ilorin yesterday (Monday). There will be more of such meetings in the other states that are yet to be visited.”
Meanwhile, the name of Justice Walter Onnoghen, would be sent to the Senate, this week for confirmation as the CJN, This Day reports.
A source at the Presidency hinted that the move was to douse tension generated by the delay in forwarding his (Onnoghen) name to the Senate for confirmation.
In the world of sports, The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have confirmed that the Super Eagles will take on Senegal in a friendly in London on March 23 as part of preparations for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon, Complete Sports reports.
Nigeria will welcome newly crowned African kings Cameroon at the end of August in Uyo with the return leg four days later in continuation of the 2018 World Cup qualifying tournament.
The Super Eagles top the qualifying group with six points from two matches, while Cameroon are second on two points.
