A senior management staff in the Delta state oil producing areas development commission (DESOPADEC), Hon. Ochor Chris Ochor, has called on Nigerians to abolish the age long cultural practice of female circumcision.
The practice of female circumcision is common in most rural communities in the southern areas of Nigeria.
Ochor made the call during a seminar organized Miss Maureen Achugbe, the Ndokwa youth ambassador in Ebedei, a rural community in Ukwuani local government area of Delta state.
Hon Ochor called on parents to consider the idea and join hands with the government to ensure that female circumcision is stopped as it has no biblical injunction and health benefits, but rather pains and discomfort to the girl child.
“This long time cultural practice has no health and biblical benefits, but rather carries with it negative health problems and the practice has to be stopped,” he said.
Hon Ochor said for the practice to stop, parents have to agree. They have to know the health implication of the act of female circumcision.

While appreciating the organisers of the program for the courage to come up with such idea, he tasked parents to ensure the proper training of their children, so that as they grow they will impact positive contribution to their communities.
He noted that the youths are the leaders of tomorrow, and they need to be properly trained, with fear of God, while the youths should equally reciprocate the efforts of their parents, by shunning all acts capable of tarnishing their images.
The one day seminar which was attended by many people from Ukwuani council area had the theme: Parenting, with sub topic on FGM, Breast Cancer, and diabetes.
The event was organised by Miss Maureen Achugbe, the Nwa Ada Ndokwa Youth Ambassador, for the 2016 as part of her Pet Project for her one year reign.
