Prime Minister Theresa May said the attacker was someone known by police and MI5, and the working assumption was that he was inspired by Islamist terrorism.
He had been investigated some years ago over violent extremism. The Islamic State terror group has claimed that the attacker was one of its ‘soldiers’.
