Senate President Bukola Saraki has faulted the model through which the power sector is being operated in Nigeria, blaming the privatization process as the cause of the power sector’s poor performance.

Saraki said despite the understanding of the issue, nobody is willing to tackle the issue head long.
The Cable reports the senate president saying the senate had decided to the issue upon itself to find solution to the crippling power deficit in the nation.

He made the statement while addressing his colleagues after a three weeks break on Tuesday at the floor of the senate.
He said: “Distinguished colleagues, before we left for the break, myself and a select few met with stakeholders in the power sector to get an understanding of why no progress has been made thus far, despite the best intention; and the revelations were mind-boggling”.

He insisted that whether generation or distribution, the present power sector will never take Nigeria anywhere, adding that the power sector has failed and no Nigerian is willing to tackle the issue and get a lasting solution to the problem.

He said: “I have mandated the senate committee on power to continue the consultation with the relevant parties to forge a path to solving our crippling power deficit. After all, if we are going to drive Nigerian industry, we need to resolve this and fast.”
Saraki explained that the senate will pass the medium term expenditure framework and fiscal strategy paper before the week runs off.
