Increase fuel price and face our wrath – Petrol marketers warned

– The unions said Nigerians would not want to hear of any increase in the price of petroleum products owing to the biting recession

– There had been speculations of a possible hike in the price of fuel and this was made obvious on Monday, January 23 with the complaints of residents from Kano

The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN) both under the umbrella of NUPENGASSAN have warned against any proposed hike in the price of petroleum products.

Why Nigerians cannot take any further fuel hike - NUPENGASSAN

Nigerians have constantly kicked against proposed hike in fuel price

According to the two bodies, Nigerians are not smiling because of the harsh economic condition brought by recession.

There had been speculations that the price of petroleum products may be hiked. The speculations were further fueled by the reported increase in the price of petrol in Kano state on Monday, January 24, 2017.

Speaking in Abuja at a hearing of the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on the review of pump price of premium motor spirit, NUPENGASSAN said: “This is not the right time to review the pricing template of PMS due to certain reasons.

“The recession is biting hard on all Nigerians. Any attempt to further review the template will further impoverish ordinary

Nigerians, as the additional price will be transferred to the end users of the product.”

The Guardian reports that the group managing director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Dr Maikanti Kacalla Baru, who was represented by the organisation’s chief executive officer, downstream, Henry Ikem-Obih, denied any plans to increase the pump price.

Baru’s position was also supported by his counterpart at the Nigeria Petroleum Marketing Company (NPMC), Mr Farouk Ahmed, who said his organisation had no intention to double the travails of Nigerians.

According to Baru, the coastal price of petrol to marketers is N123 per litre just as Ahmed assured that his organisation would ensure availability of fuel through its retail outlets.

He however lamented that his organisation could not do much to reduce the price of kerosene and diesel since the prices of the products have been deregulated and affected by the current foreign exchange.
