I was pushed to smuggle drug because my business failed, 47-year-old man suspect claims

– A 47-year-old textile dealer bound for Cambodia has been arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, with 4.4kg of methamphetamine

– The drug is said to have a street value of $1.4 million according to a primary investigation by the NDLEA

– The textile dealer however insisted that he was pushed into drug smuggling because his textile business failed

The 47-year-old man said he was pushed to drug smuggling because his textile business failed and he was promised a sum of N1 million

A textile dealer, Mr. Ifeka Charles Obi, is in the custody of the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

He was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja with 4.4kg of methamphetamine.

The 47-year-old man was bound for Cambodia.

The drug is said to have a street value of $1.4 million according to a primary investigation by the NDLEA.

The suspect, according to a statement signed by NDLEA spokesman Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, was allegedly handed the drug in Lagos but decided to travel through Abuja because the airport is believed to be negligent when it comes to inspection.

Mr. Ifeka Charles Obi hails from Oba in Idemili South Local Government of Anambra State and was allegedly handed the drug in Lagos.

He was also alleged to have been promised N1 million upon successful delivery of the drug.

According to NDLEA commander at the airport Mr. Hamisu Lawan, the drug was detected during the outward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airlines flight.

“The 40 parcels of suspected whitish substance found on the suspect, Ifeka Charles Obi, 47 years old tested positive for methamphetamine with a total weight of 4.4kgs. The drug was hidden in foodstuff, but we were able to detect it and the suspect also apprehended,” he said.

The suspect, who was said to have confessed to the crime, insisted that he was pushed into smuggling when his business failed.

Going further, he said that: “This is my first time of smuggling dr*gs, and I agreed to do it so as to get money for my textile business. They promised to pay me N1 million with all-expenses paid trip to Cambodia. The drug was carefully hidden in foodstuffs. Still it was detected. I accept everything as my fate,” he said.

Meanwhile, a first-hand experience documentary detailing challenges of people battle drug addiction is set to berth on TV screens.

The documentary, produced by a faith-based nonprofit organization called the House of Freedom exposed the drug life of people in impoverished communities including but not limited to Ejigbo, Ijora, Iwaya, Bariga and Somolu.
