In a Facebook live video released by the senator, the senator warned that if oil prices should crash, Nigeria might find itself in a bigger economic crises than the country is currently in.
Bruce in the video said: “Nigeria has a great population of men, women and children with remarkable potential but Nigerian greatness and economic well-being is not going to be realized just because we have a large population. If we have a large population of consumer, we’ll only make other nations great, we won’t become great ourselves.
“The main task before Nigerian leaders therefore, is to covert our population from a population of consumers to a population of producers. We cannot do this by selling more oil, Nigeria is not oil rich, we are oil poor. Yes we have a large oil reserve, but we have an even larger population.
“Today, we are importing food to feed that population. When the price of oil crashes, we cannot feed
“Instead of giving out N5000 a month to the poor, why doesn’t the government give them a piece of land each and free seeds and fertilizer so they can grow their own food.
If you feed a man with N5000 a month, you have not changed his poverty, but if you teach him how to grow his own food and sell to others, then you have converted him from a beggar to a small business owner. And then you can encourage our youths to grow their own food and make a mandatory for every youth corper to maintain a farm for which the government will provide land, seeds and fertilizers. After the NYSC, these youths will take the skills and be able to grow their own food for life.
“If we just rely on our sheer numbers without developing the skills, talent and capacity of our people, we will continue to be the giant of Africa that cannot feed itself.”
