Hearing about the misconduct of a police officer is certainly no news in Nigeria. Most of the officers in the force seems to be more interested in pulling the force down rather than carrying out their obligations.

Between the months of October and December 2016, policemen in Lagos were involved in about 153 cases of professional misconduct thereby topping the chart of bad behaviors of police officers in the country.
The report made by the Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit of the Nigeria Police revealed that 822 complaints were filed against the policemen across the nation with 18.62 percent of the cases filed under Lagos police command.

A police sergeant working in the Federal Capital Territory was proven guilty in a case of extortion was demoted to the rank of Corporal; this was made known by PCRRU, ACP Abayomi Shogunle, the officer in charge. Apart from this case, 8 officers were also sanctioned due to complaints received at the unit.
It was also disclosed that some of the cases were false, the number of false cases totaled to 156 as against the 96 recorded in the first quarter. The number of false cases recorded in the second and third quarters are 35 and 51 respectively.
Shogunle revealed that Kebbi and Jigawa State commands are still at the bottom of the chart with no case reported against them while Taraba and Katsina state commands recorded one case each in the period under review.

FCT and Rivers Command closely followed Lagos with total number of 130 and 116 cases respectively.”
The PCRRU further stated that police officers caught in recent viral online scandals have been identified and are being investigated. He also said that the required departmental actions are ongoing with the unit being able to solve 636 cases filed against police officers in the last quarter of the past year.
The officer in charge also revealed that Ibrahim Idris, the IG of police has set in place a reward mechanism that will take care of state police commands with zero case of police professional misconduct.

Shogunle said “To support the “Change Begins With Me” initiative of the Federal Government, the IG has mandated the PCRRU to also attend to complaints of abuse of office/corrupt practices involving public/civil servant at all levels of government; the unit call centre at Force Headquarters, Abuja is being upgraded to meet up with the added task.”
