Why Muslims should seek Islamic knowledge

Editor’s note: It is incontrovertible fact that knowledge is power and whoever has it, automatically has power. This fact has also been attested to in the holy Qur’an according to Islamic scholars. In this article, Uztaz Yunus Al-Imam, explains the importance of seeking Islamic knowledge among Muslims. He also analyses that the high status of knowledge was strongly established in Islam through explicit texts in the Qur’an and the Hadith as well as in the writings of the scholars of Islam.

Al-Imam, who is the Director of Right Path Arabic School, Lagos, teaches Islamic theology, Etiqutte of seeking knowledge, Quranic recitation, Arabic language and syntax, Islamic creed and science of Hadith among others.

There is no other religion or institution that gives as much importance to knowledge as the religion of Islam. The religion has made seeking knowledge incumbent upon all Muslims and has deemed that not doing so as a sin.

Why seeking Islamic knowledge is compulsory for all Muslims

Some children reading from the Holy Qur’an

The Prophet, may Allah bless and give him peace, said in an authentic narration (Hadeeth) that: “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” (Al-Tirmidhi).

This obligation is not limited to a certain gender or class, but rather it is as much as an obligation upon women as it is for men, the young and the old, and the poor and the rich.

Allah has raised the ranks and status of those who have knowledge, and has praised them in many places in the Quran. Allah says: “Allah raises of those who believe and those who have been given knowledge many levels.” (Quran 58:11)

There is a great difference between a Muslim who has knowledge and one who does not. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) described this in his saying:

“The excellence of a scholar over another (ordinary) worshipper is like the excellence of the full moon over the rest of the heavenly bodies.” (Abu Dawood)

He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said: “The excellence of a scholar over another (ordinary) worshiper is like the excellence of me over the least of you.” (Al-Tirmidthi).

Why has Allah given such preference to those who have knowledge to those who do not? The role of the Prophets was to impart knowledge to the creation, knowledge directly from our Creator, about His Self and Attributes, as well as how humans are to please Him and avoid His anger.

In the same vein, the Islamic knowledge in the life of a Muslim makes him worship Allah correctly, does deeds which please Allah and avoids what angers Him and that is why apart from teaching Islamic knowledge, we also teach our students moral in Right Path Arabic School.

Basically, religious knowledge with the blend of western education are tools for making Godly children and correcting

societal ills.

The lack of adequate exposure to the teachings of Islamic knowledge is partly responsible for persistent societal ills. A child that is well brought up in the ways of God will be peaceful with himself and his environment.

Therefore, for Muslims to be well grounding in the practise of Islam, it requires some fundamentals which include learning and comprehensive understanding of the noble Qur’an and the traditions of the prophet.

To be able to read the Qur’an and understand what has been read aids in no small measure the practise of Islam. Fundamentally, it is required of all Muslims to understand the words of God to be able to worship Him as He is to be worshipped.

Therefore, for us at Right Path Arabic Institute which is an affiliate of Islamic University, Madinah and Azhar University, Cairo, teaching and understanding Arabic language is one of our core objectives because it is an essential for learning and understanding the Qur’an and the tradition of prophet.

The Qur’an and traditions of the prophet are books of wisdom therefore for any one that learn and understands it; such person cannot but have positive impact on his community. Also, it promotes internal and communal peace as it is an encyclopaedia and manuals for all Muslims who desire worldly bliss and a rewarding hereafter.

Why seeking Islamic knowledge is compulsory for all Muslims

Therefore, to perfect our Islam, it is required for us to learn, understand and act the Qur’an and the hadiths and these are our aims at the Right Path Institutes.

Over the years, through our qualitative teachings, we have been able to mould characters and inculcate Islamic values in over 300 people since the inception of the institute in 2012.

For us, imparting knowledge is more important to us than profiting from our students despite we have challenges. There have been a lot of hues and cries from sycophants and haters of religion of peace who have been trying unsuccessfully to get us out of our present location.
