This is why Customs will prosecute vehicle owners in Nigeria

The Nigerian Customs Service has said that it will prosecute owners of vehicles who fail to pay customs duty on their vehicles.

To this end, the service has given a month grace period to all owners of vehicles who have not paid their customs duty to do so to avoid prosecution.

In a statement signed by Acting public relations officer of the Nigerian Customs, Joseph Attah, the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali, said the grace period will run from Monday March 13 to April 12, 2017.

Col. Hameed said all motor dealers and private owners of vehicles should visit the nearest customs zonal office to pay the appropriate customs duty on their vehicles.

Hameed called on persons in possession of such vehicles to take advantage of the grace period to pay appropriate duties on them, noting that there will aggressive

anti-smuggling operation after the deadline of Wednesday April 12, 2017.

He listed the four zonal offices of the Nigeria Customs Service as Zone A Headquarters, No. 1 Harvey Road, Yaba, Lagos; Zone B Headquarters, Kabala Doki, Kaduna; Zone C Headquarters, Nigeria Ports Authority, Port Harcourt and Zone D Headquarters, Yelwa Tudu Road, Bauchi state.

He said: “For the avoidance of doubt, all private car owners who are not sure of the authenticity of their vehicles customs documents can also approach the Zonal Offices to verify with a view to complying with the provision of the law.”
