Reps want to know if President Buhari really extended Shu’ara’s tenure and why
The Punch is reporting that there is presently tension in Nigeria’s education ministry over President Muhammadu Buhari’s second straight extension of the expired tenure of a permanent secretary Dr. Jamila Shu’ara.
According to the report, Shu’ara’s tenure expired in February 2016 but was extended by a presidential order for a year.

However, after her tenure was further extended again after its expiration in February 2017, the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education raised eyebrows.
The Committee uncovered this anormaly while investigating how Shu’ara remained in office even after reaching the mandatory civil service retirement age of 60 years in 2016.
Two weeks ago, the committee, chaired by Zakari Mohammed, a member of the All Progressives Congress, demanded evidence of the presidential approval for the extension of service from Shu’ara.
The committee said it found her extension of tenure odd and demanded a written evidence of Buhari’s directive to extend her service. She has failed to show up before the committee but has till Thursday, March 16 to provide the letter.
While still on this, the minister of education Adamu Adamu wrote the lawmakers to say that Buhari had granted her a second extension of one more year.
The letter dated March 7, with reference number, FME/S/1316/C.5/1 claimed that President Buhari granted the second extension “in principle” but that a formal letter of approval has yet to be conveyed to Shu’ara by the Head of Service of the Federation Winifred Oyo-Ita.

The letter read in part: “I also wish to inform you that His Excellency, Mr. President, has, in principle, already approved the extension of the tenure of Dr. Jamila Shu’ara as Federal Permanent Secretary for a period of one year with effect from 17th of February, 2017.
“I have duly informed the Chief of Staff to the President of this development, and even though I have not seen his directive to the Head of Service, he has shown me her response, which in summary, is to say that the Head of Service is yet to convey approval to the officer concerned.
“Consequently, Dr. Shu’ara has, in the interim, handed off the functions of the office until formal conveyance…”
Meanwhile, following his 51-day medical vacation in the United Kingdom, President Buhari is set to resume work today, March 13.
A source in the presidency has dismissed the rumour of the president’s incapacitation on account of his declaration that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will continue to function for more weeks, saying President Buhari is as fit as a fiddle.
