Students block UNILAG gate, demand rusticated leaders’ recall

– Students from tertiary institutions across the South-west states under the umbrella of ‘Save UNILAG Coalition’ has asked the management of the institution to recall their rusticated leaders

– The university, however, denied the involvement of the university students in the protest, describing the protesters as rusticated students and their allies

Students from tertiary institutions across the South-west states under the umbrella of ‘Save UNILAG Coalition’ on Monday March 6, blocked the entrance gates of the University of Lagos, Akoka, demanding the reinstatement of the rusticated leaders of the university’s proscribed students union.

The protest, which forced the university management to lock the institution’s entrance gates, impeded free flow of human and vehicular traffic in and out of the campus, with a team of policemen stationed at the gate to prevent the protesters from gaining entry.

This is even as the university denied the involvement of the university students in the protest, describing the protesters as rusticated students and their allies.

They also carried banners and placards with inscriptions that read: “Save UNILAG Coalition”, “Reinstate UNILAG 11 now!”, “We deserve a better future”, among others.

Daily Trust reports that the students, operating under the auspices of Alliance of Nigerian Students Against Neoliberal Attacks (ANSA) had last week hinted on its planned protest slated for March 6, 2017 under the tag: “A protest to demand the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of Adeyeye Olorunfemi, the National Secretary of ANSA and the UNILAG 10.”

The students called on their colleagues from other tertiary institutions to join the protest.

The intervention of the institution’s Dean Students’ Affairs, Prof Ademola Adeleke and police officers however ended the protest.

In a statement by the UNILAG Deputy Registrar, Information, Toyin Adebule, the University insisted that its students were not among the protesters.

“The University of Lagos students are not protesting. The gathering outside the University gate consists of rusticated students and allies. They have challenged the University in court and the case has been struck out,” the statement read.
