Editor’s note: The insistence of the Senate that the Comptroller General of Custom Services, Rtd. Col. Hameed Ali should appear before it with the custom uniform that indicates his rank as C.G, has continued to generate reactions from Nigerians both home and abroad. Although he appeared today before the Senate as mandated, but his failure to wear the uniform angered the lawmakers who later vowed to remove him as CG.
In this article, Olaiya Abdurraheem, explains why the Senate should concentrate on its legislative duties rather than focus on issue of uniform that does not solve Nigeria’s economic recession.
The stance of the Red Chamber concerning the CG of Custom is disappointing and appears to be too childish of the Senate.
The moment a father starts reminding his son that “do you know I’m older than you”, then, then the father has lost all respect already.
It has been established in various aspects and on numerous occasions that “no law makes it compulsory for the Comptroller General of Custom to put on uniform”. In fact, there have various instances where former CGs did not put on uniform.
And of course what the senators are asking of him has no law backing it – which is not a good quality of a set of people we call “Legislators”.

So, in essence, it is not proper for the Senate to be dishing out commands of which they possess no authority to do. It shows they are jobless and have lost focus.
“If the National Assembly is not happy seeing him in Mufti, they should amend the law.”
So, it will be clear and no one will have any excuse not to appear in Uniform.
Let them wake up to their task and know that Nigeria is running out of time than to be wasting it on a child’s play.
