Senior advocate of Nigeria Femi Falana has said that the Senate has the right to order the arrest of the SGF Lawal Babachir
Human rights activist and senior advocate of Nigeria Femi Falana has said that the secretary to the government of the federation Lawal Babachir can be arrested for his failure to appear before the Nigerian Senate.
Falana said the Nigerian Senate can order the arrest of Babachir if he fails to appear before it as expected.
In a statement released on Thursday, March 23, the senior lawyer said ongoing investigation of funds for the North-East humanitarian contract allegedly misappropriated by the SGF has legal backing.

The senior lawyer however said that Babachir’s case before the Senate is different from that of the comptroller general of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Hameed Ali.
“The investigation being conducted by the Shehu Sani committee into the grass-cutting contract is backed by Section 88(2) of the constitution. So, the SGF is
“If he fails to appear, the committee is competent to order his arrest pursuant to Section 89 of the constitution. This case is materially distinguishable from that of the CGC of Customs, who was invited to justify a policy on import duty,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Senate Ad-hoc committee on the mounting humanitarian crisis in the North-East has postponed the second investigative hearing on the misappropriation of funds by Babachir.

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that the committee led by Senator Shehu Sani said the hearing was postponed due to the refusal of the SGF and his company to appear before it.
Although the SGF had threatened the Senate with a legal suit, he backtracked on his decision to go legal while asking the committee to reschedule the hearing for another date.
