The battle for the leadership of the Delta state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has taken off as the change from the old leadership to a new one takes effect on April 18, 2017.
Not less than four journalists from both state and national media organisations are set to clinch the plum position of the chairman of the union in the state.
Some of the contestants for the position include Fidelis Egugbo, a senior journalist and the Government House correspondent of The POINTER Newspaper, a paper published by Delta state government.

Others are Felix Igbekoyi, the state correspondent of the Independent Newspapers and the outgoing Vice chairman of the union; Victor Sorokwu, former chairman of the correspondent chapel and a reporter with the Daily Trust newspaper and Churchill Oyowel, Public relations officer with the state ministry of water resources and the outgoing secretary of the union in the state.
Oyowe was also chairman of the information chapel in Asaba, the Delta state capital.
These journalists have served the union in different capacities where they have proven their worth to the members in the state.

Egugbo, besides being government house correspondent for the POINTER newspapers, he was also the chairman of the POINTER Chapel where he excelled greatly and made excellent impact.
At the collection of his chairmanship form, he told his colleagues that a new dawn was set for the union if he eventually emerges chairman of the state chapter of the NUJ.
He said while the incumbent chairman of the union, Norbert Chiazor, and his predecessors have contributed their best to improve on the status of the union, his emergence would usher in new ideas that will reposition the NUJ in line with the 21st century challenges and open more vista of opportunities for aspiring journalists.

Egugbo said: “The greatest challenge in an elitist union, like the NUJ, is to emerge unopposed because, you have to serve as if every member of the union would have contested against you and because of the trust they declined to contest.
“I am humbled by the level of goodwill, the support from the members and non-members of our great union and by His grace, their trust will not be misplaced – there will be inter-chapel football tournament to boost unity among our people; monthly media chat which we shall call ‘NUJ Delta State Council hot seat’ where national issues will be discussed.“

Egugbo reeled out his numerous achievement while he chaired the POINTER chapel, said what he did at the POINTER will be replicated in diverse forms to create an enviable platform for journalism practice in the state.
He listed various programs he has put together to push the NUJ to a greater height.
Victor Sorokwu, who was once chairman of the correspondent chapel has also listed catalogues of programs he intends to run if given the opportunity to become chairman of the NUJ in the state.
