Students writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) 2017 have two novels they must read for the Use of English subject.
For the examination starting May 6, 2017, here are the two compulsory novels:
1. “In Dependence” by Sarah Ladipo Manyika for UTME Candidates
Sarah Ladipo Manyika is also the author of the book: ‘Like a Mule bringing Ice cream to the sun’
A brief summary of ‘In Dependence’ according to Google reads: It is the early-sixties when a young Tayo Ajayi sails to England from Nigeria to take up a scholarship at Oxford University.
In this city of dreaming spires, he finds himself among a generation high on visions of a new and better world.
The whole world seems ablaze with change: independence at home, the Civil Rights movement and the first tremors of cultural and sexual revolutions.
It is then that Tayo meets Vanessa Richardson, the beautiful daughter of an ex-colonial officer. “In Dependence” is Tayo and Vanessa’s story of a brave but bittersweet love affair.
It is the story of two people struggling to find themselves and each other a story of passion and idealism, courage and betrayal, and the universal desire to fall, madly, deeply, in love.

2. “The Last Days at Forcados High School” by A.H. Mohammed for Direct Entry Candidates
‘Last days of Forcados High School’ has been used for several years in UTME
‘The last days of Forcados high school’ is a funny and brutally honest story about tolerance, self-discovery, family, friendship and life on the brink of adulthood.

According to the instructions from the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB), candidates will be tested on these two books in Use of English, which is compulsory for every candidate, regardless of the course you intend to study in school.
Meanwhile, Dr Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Head of Public Relations has made known the date sales of forms will begin in an interview on Monday, March 13 in Bwari.
Benjamin said the date was fixed following an agreement that was reached on the harmonization of the examination timetable at a meeting with other exam bodies on Jan. 24.
“We will begin the sale of the admission forms on March 20, while UTME is scheduled to hold in May,” he said.
