The Nigerian Army on Friday, March 24, said it has begun its five-days Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship (NASAC) 2017 in Sambisa forest, Borno state.

Speaking to journalists on the competition, the chief of training and operations army D. D Ahmadu, a Major general said the event, a fire power demonstration is designed to consolidate on the total defeat and routing out of the Boko Haram terrorists from their most hideous hide out.

Ahamdu said: “It is a competition among the formations of the Nigerian Army. The objective of the Championship is to sharpen the marksmanship skills of the Nigerian Army personnel. The formations will be competing in marksmanship with the best formation carting away the prestigious Chief of Army Staff’s trophy.”
He also said the competition will mark the commencement of the on-going plan to quickly make Sambisa forest, a general area safe for habitation and a location for Nigerian Army training activities.
“To this end, provision has already been made for the opening of more roads, construction of culverts and bridges by the Nigerian Army Engineers to facilitate easy movements to the general area,” Ahmadu said.
“The NASAC 2017 is unique with the introduction of Nigerian Army fire power demonstration as part of the activities. This would enable Nigerian Army to test its armoured tanks, infantry weapons and artillery guns as well as various weapons in its inventory to enhance battle marksmanship and professionalism of its personnel,” he said.

He further urged the general public especially the residents of Borno state not to panic as their safety be guaranteed during the event.
Also, in another development, the spokesperson for the Nigerian army Sani Usman said troops of the 103 Battalion, 7 Division, Nigerian Army of Operation Lafiya Dole and some Civilian JTF conducted clearance operation at Gombole in Konduga local government area.

Usman said the troops were able to neutralized a number of Boko Haram terrorists hiding in the area.
“They also discovered and destroyed an Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) factory located at the village,” Usman said.
“The team further recovered three motorcycles, four primed Siucide Vests and four stolen military desert camouflage. They rescued four females and six children from the terrorists.
“Unfortunately, a soldier sustained injury and he was evacuated by Nigerian Air Force. The soldier is in stable condition,” he said.
