Ile-Ife crisis: It was not a clash, were attacked but we won't retaliate – Hausa leader

– Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai has warned against inciting comments or peddling of videos that could lead to a renew clash between Hausas and Yorubas in Ile-Ife

– The community leader of Hausas in Ile-Ife has also vowed that there would be no reprisal attacks on the people of Ile-Ife

After a communal clash that led to massive destruction of properties and deaths of many people in Ile-Ife, the Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai has warned against inciting comments from those calling for revenge.

Vanguard reports that the governor, through his spokesperson, Samuel Aruwan, said in a statement yesterday in Kaduna that anyone found appealing for revenge will be arrested and prosecuted.

The warnings are part of a statement issued on behalf of the Kaduna state Security Council, which commended the vast majority of the residents for their commitment to peace and urged them to continue to resist and reject any attempt to disrupt the peace and tranquility currently prevailing in the state.

The statement warns Kaduna residents against the incitement of unnecessary tensions in the state because of events elsewhere in the country, it urged those responsible for it to desist from circulating videos and images with inciting commentary and calls to citizens for reprisals.

However, Seriki Hausawa of Ife, Alhaji Abubakar Madagali has reportedly described the clash between Yoruba and Hausa communities in Ile-Ife.

Speaking at a conference attended by all leaders of tribes living in Ile-Ife. Madagali said most of his followers have nowhere else to call ‘home’ except

Ile-Ife where they resides.

He said: “We, the Hausas living in Ile-Ife are peace lovers, the people that are leaving Ile-Ife as a result of the crises those that came here to seek greener pastures not those of us that see this place as our homes. It is not a clash between us and the Yorubas. We were attacked, our houses were razed. We are highly devastated. There is no need to look for the root cause of the crisis again. All we want is peace.”

He assured the gathering that his people will not revenge and there would not be any reprisal attacks on indigenes of Ile-Ife.

Recall that trouble started in Ile-Ife in the early hours of March 8, when an altercation between an Hausa woman and a Yoruba man degenerated into a full blown communal clash.

Meanwhile, the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has declared fasting and prayers for three days to restore peace and harmony to Ile-Ife.

The announcement was made via his deputy Idowu Adediwura, the Obalufe of Ife kingdom on Sunday, March 12 in Ile-Ife, Osun state.

The Ooni who travelled to London on Saturday, March 11 sent his deputy to deliver the message, and added that the fasting and prayers would hold from March 13 to Wednesday, March 15.
