Group to mobilise 6 million man protest against Okowa as NUT strike continues

A human rights group, Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, has given governor Okowa 7 days to attend to the needs of the striking teachers in Delta state

– The group dropped the ultimatum following the long drawn battle between the governor and the teachers in the state

– It said if the governor fails within 7 days, it will mobilise 6million man march against Okowa

A group, the Committee for Defense of Human Rights (CDHR), has given Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state seven days to attend to the needs of the striking teachers, saying failure to do so, it will moblise 6 million man march against the governor.

The strike which commenced on Thursday March 9, 2017, has been on for 13 days with the situation getting worse as the days grow.

On Tuesday, it was alleged that police and thugs were mobilised to intimidate some of the teachers to coerce them into resuming classes.

The committee is worried that the governor has paid deaf ears to the cries of the teachers just as it was alleged that the teachers have been getting intimidation and harassment from police allegedly under the directive of the state government.

With effect from Tuesday, March 21, 2017 running

through to Monday March 27, the group said the government meet the needs of the teachers as teachers who are said to be the foundation of nation building are being treated with kids’ gloves.

Chairman of CDHR, Prince Kehinde Taiga, who handed down the ultimatum in Warri, said if Governor Okowa fails to adhere to the call, the body will mobilize over six million Deltans across the country, including parents, guardians and students of higher institutions to stage a massive protest against the Okowa.

He said within the seven days, Governor Okowa must pay all the salaries and arrears of the striking teachers and settle other grievances so that the teachers might return to class and begin teaching the students.

He said the leadership of the former governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, who many claimed was corrupt, built schools and paid teachers regularly, “but since the inception of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa ‘s administration, education has suffered great set back in the state.
