– Delta NUT has finally suspended the strike it embarked on since March 9, 2017
– The suspension follows the state government’s readiness to meet the demands of the teachers in the state
– The teachers have been directed to return to classroom on Monday, March 27, 2017
After a titanic warfare between the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Delta state government that lasted for two weeks, the state leadership of the NUT has finally come to a truce with the government and suspended the strike.
The latest agreement was struck in Warri when the union leaders met with the state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, and other members of the state executive council where it was resolved that the strike be suspended following the resolve to the meet the demands of the teachers in the state.
In a communique made available to journalists, the NUT executive re-appraised the decisions reached with the government and thereafter directed all teachers in primary and post primary schools to resume work on Monday, March 27, 2017.

The NUT chairman, Jonathan Jemirieyigbe, had on Thursday, told journalists in Warri that “Between Thursday and Monday, we will call off the strike, we had a very fruitful discussion with the governor. We are Deltans and the Governor, Senator Okowa is a good man, dealing with us the way fathers deal with their children.”
The resolutions reached among others include that December salaries of primary school teachers be paid in full next week and that all released promotions of 2016 of primary school teachers be implemented in January 2017, while all promotions of 2014 and 2015 be fully implemented for affected teachers.

It was also agreed that no member of the NUT will be punished or victimized following the role they played while the strike lasted in the state.
In the strike which commenced on March 9, 2017, the teachers and the state government officials locked horns, a development which led to some teachers being arrested, harassed and questioned by police authorities.
