Acting President Yemi Osinbajo met with members of the United Nations Security Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, March 6.

The acting president said there was a need to re-examine ways of dealing with terrorists and insurgents.

In a statement issued by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Laolu Akande, Osinbajo said: “We must, on a global scale look again at how to deal with these new challenges. We need to look at the governing conventions, what type of legal categories, recognition of law we should give them (to the perpetrators of terror and insurgents).

“We need to re-examine how to deal with these individuals according to law.

The delegation arrived Nigeria on Sunday on a visiting mission to Lake Chad Basin Region.

They met with Northeast stakeholders in Maiduguri, Borno state, the epicenter of Boko Haram insurgency and home of thousands of displaced persons.

The delegates also spent time in a tent 15 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Earlier, the council delegation met with Udoma Udo Udoma, the minister of budget and national planning at his office.

This is the first time the UN Security Council is visiting Nigeria. The visit is part of the UN Security Council’s mission under the UK Presidency, to the areas devastated by Boko Haram terrorists in the countries of the Lake Chad Basin – Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger.
