Ayuba Wabba, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to extend his corruption war on governors and their states.

On Friday, March 17, Wabba gave the advice to the president during the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria 4th quadrennial National Delegates conference in Uyo.

He said: “If you are fighting corruption, it must be at all levels, it must scale down to the states.”

Wabba said the level of corruption in some states was unprecedented, adding that Nigerians must demand for accountability from their leaders, as vanguards of democracy.

Speaking on the second tranche of the Paris Club refund loan, he said state governors should be made to release them.

He said: “We must be proactive by ensuring that government at the centre is on top of the situation and demand for accountability.

“What we are saying is that, let the government also muster the will to make sure that the first tranche that was released is accounted for.”

He said: “If not, we will not have social stability, cohesion and we will not get out of recession.”

Also, Mr Anthony Emmanuel, the outgoing president of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, said that the survival of the country’s economy depended on the workability of the maritime sector.

Mr Emmanuel said: “Therefore, any government policy that affects efficiency of the ports and quality service delivery is bound to have collateral effect on the entire economy.”

Meanwhile, the NLC has accused the Federal Government of engaging in unnecessary delay in constituting a tripartite committee to negotiate the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

Mr Wabba made the accusation at the 4th NLC National Gender Conference and Election of the Leadership of National Women Commission on Wednesday in Abuja.
