JUST IN: Tension as UI shuts down, orders students to vacate campus immediately

– The institution’s management ordered all students to vacate the premises before 6:00 pm on Monday, May 29 as a protest erupted

– The aggrieved students are said to be protesting against the institution’s management over its alleged insensitivity

The University of Ibadan has immediately shut down academic activities asking students to vacate the tertiary institution before 6:00 pm on Monday, May 29.

The announcement came from the institution’s management following a protest embarked upon by the students.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the students took to the streets of Ibadan, Oyo state in protest against the alleged insensitivity of the university management.

According to the report, the director of Communications and Publication of the university, Olatunji Oladejo, said closure became necessary in other to avert crisis.

ZENITHBLOG.com learnt that Oladejo said the institution’s vice chancellor, Prof Idowu Olayinka, had convened an emergency meeting of the university Senate to review the circumstances surrounding the development.

“The University of Ibadan in its wisdom has decided to shift the examination earlier scheduled for June to July, 2017,” Oladejo said.

The director said undergraduate students are to resume back in school on July 17, while the post graduate students would continue to stay on campus for their research activities.

At a congress at the weekend, the students had reportedly passed a resolution to disrupt the forthcoming examinations of the institution if they were not provided with identity cards.

They also asked the authorities constitute the Students’ Welfare Board as well as allow use of cooking appliances that had been banned in the halls of residence.
