Matia Okiror is 69 years old and has been selling roasted goat testiclеs since he was 24. Will you go for that menu? Well, apparently many in Uganda do, because Okiror’s business has always been very good.

Okiror’s clients at his stall in the city of Gulu are loyal to him. Animal testiclеs are normally thrown away, but not in this part of the country.

Okiror starts his work in the early morning hours, buying goat testiclеs at the several slaughter houses in Kanyogoga ‘A’ village, where he holds his business.

Once at his kiosk, Okiror slices the testiclеs – among other products – and then starts cooking them on a charcoal stove. The place is not very tidy, but clients do not mind since the end result is tasty roasted meat.

Customers apparently call the testiclеs “Irish”, because they look like the potatoes that come from that country, Okiror comments. “I decided to specialize in roasting and selling goats’ testiclеs because they have a ready market,” he adds.

Okiror explains he sold roasted goat testiclеs only a side business, and that he only took it as a full-time work once he retired. He worked as potter and

cleaner at Gulu Municipal Council for many years.

In the beginning, Okiror even got the testiclеs for free, because no one wanted them. It was only when his providers saw he was making money, that they did start to put a price on them. His profit is anyway good. Each testiclе costs him N26 (300 Ush), and he then sells it at N87 (1,000 Ush). Some days, he is able to earn between N13k – N17k (150,000 to 200,000 Ush).

Okiror comments that his venture is very competitive, because testiclе meat is cheaper than other parts of animals’ bodies. He is happy with his business achievements. “I have built a house, bought cattle and goats,” he proudly affirms.
