A civil society organization in Nigeria has called for the support of biotechnology and genetic research in Nigeria.
The group, New Initiative for Credible Leadership (NICreL) said it has become necessary for the federal government to support research and development based agency, the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA).
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the group said NABDA under the leadership of Lucy Ogabdu has focused on promoting, coordinating, and setting research and development priority in biotechnology for Nigeria.

The group’s executive secretary Steven Onwu said the current economic recession in Nigeria due to the fall in oil prices should encourage leaders especially the FG to explore other options like biotechnology, genetic engineering among others to support the country’s gross national earning.
Onwu said within the last two years NABDA has continued to work hard under its mandate to put the nation in line with global realities.

He said this has been achieved through NABDA’s various innovations, scientific breakthroughs in the field of genetics and intellectual acumen to move the country forward.
“The organization is patriotically driving the “change agenda” by blazing the trail in this uncommon field and the agency deserves a better funding support to do more.
“No country in the world is as naturally endowed as Nigeria in terms of 21st century resources that are scattered across the various locations in the country and would require the needed intellectual drivers to achieve that amount of greatness which is commensurate with our resources,” Onwu said.
He further called on the Nigerian government to support the Ogbadu-led NABDA to promote biotechnology activities that positively respond to national aspirations on food security, job/wealth creation, affordable healthcare delivery and sustainable environment.
