Senate marks 2 years with 95 bills passed and 72 petition treated (infographic)

The Nigeria Senate on Friday, June 9, marked its two years since the inauguration of the Red Chamber.

The Red Chamber led by the Senate President Bukola Saraki said it passed 95 bills in its two years of existence.

It also said that 72 petitions which was sent to the Senate were treated within the two years.

The bills passed by this present Senate is 67 and 72 more than the seventh and sixth Senate.

Also the petitions treated by the Eight Assembly is 66 more than that treated by the seventh and sixth Senate respectively.

The Nigerian Senate is marking its two years of inauguration

Speaking on the bills passed, the Senate President said the bills passed is not just about numbers but the impact of these bills in the lives of ordinary Nigerians is more important.

Saraki said: “Today is an historic day for many reasons, we are two years on this saddle, and it’s been 2 years of productive legislation.”

He said: “When we started i knew the 8th Senate will be significantly different irrespective of our unending barriers to make laws for the peace and good governance of the Federation which we have done.”

The senate President also added that the Eight Assembly has succeeded in improving and breaking an 12 years jinx by the Petroleum Industrial Governance Bill.

Commending the lawmakers on their contributions in the successes of the Eight Assembly, Saraki said, all senators dedicated their time to do something worthwhile for Nigerians.

“This is the highest no of petitions in the history of the Senate, we have treated 72 petitions so far,” he said.

“It is my view as we look to the next two years that we empower our committee on Anti-Corruption to strengthen the corruption fight,” he added.

Also speaking on the Eight Assembly at two, the minority leader Godswill Akpabio said he is happy that the Senate was able to establish a budgetary process where Nigerians were able to contribute to the passage of the budget.

Akpabio said: “We have come here to proffer solutions to issues. On a serious note there is still a lot to be done&we are proud of bills passed.”

The Senate further adjourned its plenary to Tuesday, June 13.
